The Royal Academy of Fine Arts organises the academic Bachelor and Master programmes 'Visual Arts' and 'Conservation and Restoration', as well as the supplementary programme 'Specific Teacher Training'.
Visual Arts
The Bachelor programme Visual Arts progressively prepares students to become efficient, albeit still under supervision, in conducting artistic research and creating art and design forms in an original manner, making use of the kinds of particular techniques and skills that are specific to the medium they are working with (depending on the various study orientations). Knowledge of the specific materials and the skills to manipulate them in a creative fashion are considered to be important competencies.
The subsequent Master courses in Visual Arts transforms students distinguished by thorough preparatory knowledge, efficient acquisition of practical skills, and a very disciplined work ethic, into artists able to create works of art in an individual independent fashion. Within this Master programme, students will likewise become comfortable in their ability to perform within a multidisciplinary and, in certain instances, an international environment.
Conservation and Restoration
Students in the programme Conservation and Restoration are introduced daily to the diverse aspects of conservation and protection of our cultural Heritage.
During their three years Bachelor training, students learn about conservation and restoration on an academic level that comprises a cluster of subjects, after which they are ready to pass on to the one-year Master programme.
The Bachelor programme rests on the following pillars: historical techniques and technologies, materials knowledge and analysis, ethical performance (preventive) of conservation and restoration activities, Art-history analysis and Cultural Heritage. Following the Master course Conservation and Restoration, the student is capable of independent work in conservation and restoration projects and has the ability to communicate effectively with the broad heritage sector. In addition, the Master graduate has acquired the proficiency to carry out independent scientific research in the field of conservation sciences.
Specific Teacher Training
The Specific Teacher Training course dovetails, in principle, with your basic training, with the interesting complement that you will be able to follow certain training aspects of the Specific Training course simultaneously with your Master programme. You will be awarded the 'Teacher' Certificate and the field of your professional competency will be determined by the nature of your Master programme.
