 The Bachelor programme Social Work at Artesis University College Antwerp trains students to become professionals that assist and guide people in the area of their rights and duties, that imbues people with a sense of greater well-being, and teaches them to face life with greater certainty and confidence. This is an education specifically geared to practical experiencing wherein providing care and services for people forms the central focus.The programme lasts on the average six semesters (three years). In the first year, we are laying a broad general foundation base. As of their second year, students can opt for Social Work and Social Services, Human Resources Management, or Social-Cultural work. The graduating option Social Work arms students with methods and communication skills enabling them in their professional career to span a bridge between people and the environment in which they are to function. The students are taught to become 'aid providers' and 'guiding forces' that are striving for social change, enhanced well-being, and an improved quality of life. In the graduation option Human Resources Management, students are taught not only to have eyes for problems in the workplace environment but also to steer a course within the tension field employer, employee, unions, and the social context wherein they operate. They are trained to become 'bridge builders' between employer and employee and search for an equitable balance between the economic and social interests, thus to make a real contribution to personnel policy within an organisation. The creativity and the organisational talent as displayed by students are further challenged and refined in the graduation option Social-Cultural Work. Students are stimulated to put these skills to good use and to employ an array of work forms to set up animation or cultural projects, interesting educational or intensive activities promoting the sense of community spirit.
